Roy Cruz, a mosaic
artist, developed his expertise through a family trade, learned by his father.
His years in the trade working with ceramic tile, marble, flagstone, granite,
slate, concrete, and stucco allowed him to experience all practicality of tile
and its aesthetics. "Modern mosaics are of hand cut porcelain tiles, and each
piece is placed for visual effect, and with different light and angles reflects
brilliantly. The cuts have different styles and angles that are the prominent
overall characteristics of a Cruz mosiac."
The panels and all materials are manufactured by the tile industry. The quarter inch panel is fireproof and as waterproof as porcelain. The tiles used are of the best manufactured for durability and color, including porcelain tile from Latco and Dal-Tile, ceramic tile, floor tile, and tiles set with real gold and silver.
Cruz is a member of the Galveston Art League, and has exhibited his work at the Artwalks and the Galveston Rosenberg Library. "The development of perception is the accumulation of thought that brings me into a maturity that is expressed through my mosaic art. I like to refer to it as Modern Mosaic Art," says Cruz. All illustrations are for sale, and Cruz also works on commission. For a wide selection of mosaic art available from the artist, please view Roy Cruz's Gallery.
In a 1995 review of the Galveston Art Walk, the Houston Press wrote, "Roy Cruz, a master of mosaic tile design, takes you into his world of brilliance, light, color, and reflections with each dazzling piece of art. His imaginative use of ceramic tile and marble reflect his thirty years of experience. Each piece of art changes before your eyes continuously as the light bounces off the colorful, uniquely cut pieces of tile."
