Frequently Asked Questions
What is ISDN and do I need it?
ISDN is a standard format of transmitting data over a high speed
digital connection. In order to use ISDN you need to have some special equipment already
in place. Basically, an ISDN telephone line and some kind of ISDN modem/router to send and
receive data. Most people use ISDN when they've already setup a local area network(LAN) in
their office and want to give their LAN high speed access to the internet (a wide area
network or WAN) with an ISDN router. Some just want a faster, more reliable, and stable
connection compared to what regular analog telephone lines are able to provide. Check out
our Accounts Services page for more on ISDN.
You say I have personal web space, what is that?
Every Dial-Up account comes with a default directory named after the
username that has a certain amount of disc space (quota) which can be used to host a
personal website. That directory contains a directory called public_html into which you
upload (FTP) you web page files. (note: must call to have web space setup)
Is it ok if I use my personal web space for commercial purposes?
Yes, just as long as the site doesn't: break any local, state, or
federal laws; exceed the allocated disc space(quota),or doesn't receive too many hits
creating a bandwidth problem, Forcing us to upgrade it to a full commercial site.
Some websites I go to will not come up or say something about not being able to
make a connection with the server. What's wrong?
A lot of things can cause this problem. Sometimes a major part of the
internet (a backbone) can be out, sometimes the server that holds the website you're going
to can be down and sometimes the website can just not exist anymore. Of course sometimes
the problem could be with NOL, and you can be sure we are working very hard to solve the
problem!
What is HTML and what does it stand for?
HTML stands for Hyper-Text Markup Language. It's the basics of starting
a webpage, just like a sandwich or plain hamburger with no condiments. There are other
programs and languages that can be used with HTML or independently of HTML as a webpage.
If you wish to learn more about HTML or Web Publishing, any Beginners Book on HTML should
be sufficient.
What hardware is necessary to log on to Networks On-Line?
We recommend nothing less than a 14400 modem and a 486SX based
computer. Anything less might not be able to support the software for surfing the web.
I had someone send me a large file by email and now I can't download anything from
my email. What's wrong?
We strongly advise you not to send/receive large binaries (over 300K)
if you're simply using a dialup 56K account. We have a FTP server open for the public that
you could use, the server name is ftp.nol.net.
Is there a way I can check my email through the web?
Yes, you can reach it by going to http://mail.nol.net/.
My 56K modem only connects at 33600 or
lower, why?
If you haven't already upgraded your modem to the v.90 standard, then
you may want to do so. Most manufactuer's have their firmware (set of instructions for the
modem) and drivers on their webpage. If you have a dedicated line to your modem, make sure
there's nothing else connected to that line and if necessary, you could try replacing the
phone line from your modem to the wall jack.
If this doesn't work, you may not be close enough to your CO. Some
other scenarios that can hinder your speed are the amount of analog/digital convertors
between you and your CO and being serviced by a SLC-hut.
I frequently get disconnected, why?
We have a idle timeout set to 15 minutes. This is used primaryly for
people that forget to log off when they leave their computer for long periods of time. If
you're not idle for 15 minutes, then you may have a problem with your modem and/or your
phone line. If you have call-waiting, make sure you have it #disabled. If you think it may
be the modem, make sure you have the current firmware (instruction set for the modem) and
your drivers up-to-date.
How do I disable call waiting?
You need to update your phone with a #70 or *70 in front of our number.
With Windows, you can go to "My Computer" -> "Dial-Up Networking"
-> double click on your NOL dialup icon -> click on Dialing Properties -> select
Disable Call Waiting and select the code that works in your area; however, *70 should work
on most lines.
How do I change my password?
We currently do not have any way for yourself to change your password.
You must contact Technical Support to change your
password.
